The Blue Dress is part of a body of work called “Blue is a Poem”.
This is a Cyanotype made of 61 4x4” sheets of sunprint kit paper, taped together with scotch tape. This is a one of a kind piece that will change over time, just like our memories change. Memories of intimate stories are logged inside the fabric of this dress. A dress I wore in the early years of my sobriety. I lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I went to art school at the Mpls college of Art and Design, rode a motorcycle, chain smoked about 2 packs Marlboro Reds a day when they cost $2.50 and wore vintage dresses and combat boots. I made my own journals out of vintage books, ribbon and mixed media… and would spend hours upon hours sitting in Muddy Waters Coffee shop, smoking, sipping coffee with an add shot of espresso, wired out of my mind on caffeine, writing in my journal with blood red dipping ink and a calligraphy pen. I LOVED the feeling of creating each word, each letter, each curve and shape of a letter with that pen on those pages. I was nervous around people. Couldn’t really hold conversations. Couldn’t look people in the eyes. Uncomfortable in my own skin. Pierced my nose to celebrate 6 years of sobriety and then again when I celebrated 8 years and then took them both out when I realized I didn’t have to shout so much about who I was… all I needed to do was BE who I was.
This dress holds the energy of this time in my life, the people in it. Michael, David, Todd, Trent, Mark. Amy. Pat. Pretty Girl. Bats. MCAD. The Egg & I. The Guthrie. Franz Kafka’s K. “Has anything happened. No only a dog howling in the moonlight.”
