From Good to Great
Module 4
Welcome to Module 4
How to take pictures of yourself and other people.
This is a module that can help you if you’re trying to update your social media, your marketing or website, headshots for an upcoming event or your book, this will help you create photos like the pros in natural lighting with nothing but your iphone tripod.
You can use these tips when you’re taking photos of friends, or your kids, when you’re on vacation or at an event together, or maybe you’re at the park with your kids and want better photos than the ones you’ve been taking.
The Tripod I Recommend for Self Portraiture with the iphone.
The eyes. The light. The energy.
** If you have a newer phone you have the option to use the “portrait” function which gives you f/stops like a film camera. If I used that function I would have used a low f/stop like f/2.8 and then my face would be in focus and the rest would be out of focus. As a photographer this has always been my favorite way to photograph EVERYTHING. With “Shallow depth of Field”. Meaning whatever is closest to the camera is in focus and the rest behind it or further away from the camera is out of focus. My favorite film camera lens is an 85mm that has an f/stop of 1.4 so the depth of field is even more “shallow” it’s DELICIOUS. But for this course - everyone has different cameras and I want you to learn how to take a photo and create this “shallow depth of field” look if you don’t have the functionality on your iphone.

I love that you can just play around with poses with that shutter release in your hand and see what ( if anything ) works.
Moral of the story… PLAY.
Self Portraits Part 4.
Q: how to get great, authentic photos of your kid?
A: Turn on their favorite music. Hand them the remote shutter release from that tripod I told you to buy. Walk away.

I mentioned “catchlight” in Module 2, underneath video 3.
Here’s a little more on the subject.
