HIS NAME IS MAX
Several Ongoing Projects Currently in Process
His Name is Max is an ongoing project about my son Max who has Down syndrome.
These portraits of my son were made with a 4x5 large format camera and NEW55 Peel apart film. Each image has a layer of the chemistry that remains after the photographs development that leaves a texture that turns a sepia tone when it dries. This layer distorts the view of my son from the viewer making it hard to see him. This symbolizes how the stereotypes of Down syndrome distort reality. Assumptions are made when you look at him and see the characteristics of Down syndrome. You don’t see Max, your see Down syndrome and decide something about him. You’re not able to see a clear picture of who my son is and what he is capable of.
This series explores how Stereotypes keep us disconnected from each other and ultimately that effects more than just my son. It’s a global epidemic caused by fear people, places and things that are different.
Differences create vibrancy.
This project offers an opportunity to look inside at our own internalized Ableism and reevaluate what’s true.
