Artist’s Statement
Solidly in my mid-fifties and with my youngest child now 21, I’m in the middle of a transition that many people think leads to social invisibility and irrelevance. This series of self-portraits is one of the ways that I’m pushing back on that tired story and having a conversation with myself about who I am right now and what I want to be next.
From April through December of 2024, I made hundreds of images based on prompts from Catherine Just. As the year progressed, I found that the results were more interesting when I got less literal, thought about a prompt in its biggest, most general sense—with no preconceived finished piece in mind—and let my body decide where to go.
