Begin Deepening
Module 1

HELLO and WELCOME!

It’s Module 1 of Begin Deepening.

Conceptual Photography 101

Self Paced Course.

I learned this process of Conceptual Photography back in 1990 when I was in Art School at the Mpls College of Art and Design. I was newly sober and this process was an incredible way for me to learn how to get comfortable inside myself inside sobriety.

I created this course after 24 years of creating artwork this way. It’s still a favorite way for me to investigate life and create art.

This is a re-release of this course 9 years later! 36 years sober. I’m still creating visually in a conceptual way. My work has shifted so much since the very beginning. I’ve taught this course on zoom live for many years since this initial one came out. The prompts have shifted, but the original foundation is the same.

You’ll notice that I’m speaking to the class about their work and talking about it in terms of day 1, 2 and so on. As this is now a fully self guided course you can do each module any day, week, month you like and review it again and again.

I’m wishing you the very best as you dive into the deep and hunt for buried treasure!

Conceptual photography

Now that we’ve set the tone and created a sacred container…Let me begin with a little description of what Conceptual Photography actually is. Watch this Video to learn my definition of it and how we are going to use that as our guide during this course.

**before you watch the next video, please take some time and go find 3 objects in your home that you find to be sacred to you. They don't need to look sacred to me...They only need to be valuable/important for you. Do not over think this! That is going to be a theme throughout the course. Whatever you choose is perfect. Place these items somewhere important, somewhere that you'll see them. We will be using them later in the course. I'll reveal more as we get to that prompt. Some of you have already done this step.

Today’s prompt

Now that we've touched a bit on what Conceptual Photography is...Here is the lesson for today.

Here is the photo I was talking about in this last video. I chose to conceal something but still look straight at the camera. The eyes are slightly out of focus so I'm present with you, but I'm more inside of myself than really with you. I didn't think this idea up before I took this photo. I was taking self portraits to mark this moment in my life and as I was creating images this one really spoke to me. I didn't really understand why until I posted it on Instagram and started writing about it.

A mentor of mine once said.... No one asks a writer what pencil they use. It's true for photographers too. It doesn't matter the camera, lens, app you're using. It's about the work.

Don't rush. You can do this course daily - with the daily prompts - or at your own pace. Schedule creative time on your calendar. Make it your habit in small ways until it becomes a part of your life.
