HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED
When my son Max was born the geneticist said to me
“You know there’s a pill you could have taken for that.”
That was my first of many hundreds of experiences of Ableism since Max was born.
He didn’t see my son as a value to society and that I should have aborted him.
MANY people have this belief.
I personally wasn’t complaining about my son having Down syndrome.
One of my missions in life is to show the world that people with Down syndrome are not a diagnosis. That they are all unique beings with value they bring to the world just like everyone else. I do this by introducing him to everyone I can so that they can meet someone new with Down syndrome and learn what he’s like. I do this by posting photos about Max so that people can learn WHO he is and become part of his growing village of people cheering for him and his success in the world. Max surfs, skateboards, plays drums, goes to high school with “typically developing” peers, acts in plays, dances, speaks Spanish and is learning Hebrew. Stereotypes do not fit here.
Max and I collaborated on these 2 paintings and I decided to use it as a moment to educate people about Max and about the limiting effects of stereotypes and to raise money for MAX so that he can become more empowered with finances.
You can learn more about these paintings HERE.
I believe art can be a voice for those that aren’t able to use theirs.
I believe art can create financial support for those you’re trying to help, whether it be a non-profit, a family, endangered animals, a community or individuals that are marginalized in some way.
I believe merging art with a cause has a WIN / WIN / WIN impact. The Artist, the Collector of the Art, and the Cause all connect with each other in service to the change they want to see in the world.
I believe in a practice of using art as activism with Love, Awareness and Education at the core.
